Stirlings Headshot

Hi, I'm Stirling!

I like to make things work well.

I'm a Product & Program Manager with a passion for UX. I build clean systems, fluid interactions, and user-friendly processes by focusing on the needs of my team and our target audience. This starts with the human-to-human interactions that I have with both clients & colleagues, striving to build cooperation amongst all stakeholders.

Projects

Below I’ve featured a collection of my UX Design work that I hope you'll find interesting.
Long Form Case Study
"Long Form" Case Studies are presented as a deep dive into the entire design process of a project. They typically begin with User Research, end with a High-Fidelity Prototype, and include everything in between.

Curate

Mobile app to help visitors navigate a museum.

Curate is a project that I undertook in the summer of 2022 through Google's UX Design Career Certificate. By taking a project from User Research to a High-Fidelity Prototype I show that I'm capable of delivering results throughout the design process.

Short Form Case Study
"Short Form" Case Studies are bite-sized looks into projects that I've worked on. They are meant to be a quick display of project outcomes, with only enough context to bring the reader up to speed. For more in depth examples of my process, check out a "Long Form" Case Study.

Radial Menus

Adapting a design solution used in video games for mobile interactions.

One design solution that I've often been intrigued by is called a Radial Menu. While radial menus are more common in video games, we rarely see them in mobile or web designs. I wanted to show that Radial Menus can translate to other platforms, so I've set out to prove it with a few designs of my own.

Adoptally

Responsive website for a dog adoption agency.

Adoptally is a project that I worked on in the summer of 2022. User Research indicated that trust in the Rescue Agency is an important factor when considering adoption. Therefore, Adoptally utilizes profiles for both the adopter and the dogs in order to find the best match.

Customer Review Dashboard

Project Management & Design for Looker Dashboard

Changing business needs required us to build a responsive dashboard to display Customer Reviews for our Tour Leader Audience. In order to do so, I had to work with data engineers and mobile developers to embed the dashboard in our company's mobile app.

A Bit About Me...

Over the past 10 years I have dedicated my career to creating a positive user experience for my customers and coworkers. I’ve focused on the details, empathized with my users, and created world class experiences that enabled them to achieve their goals.

But what does that look like in the Travel Industry?

As a Travel Advisor

As a Travel Advisor, my ‘users’ were the customers that came into our agency looking to book a trip. The ‘experience design’ began with speaking to them to understand what exactly they were looking for. Did they want a plane flight to visit a friend, or were they looking for a weeks-long vacation for their entire family. Regardless of what their needs were, I would work with them to design a travel solution that exceeded their expectations.

As a Tour Leader

As a Tour Leader, my ‘users’ were the international travelers that I drove across America on multi-week camping trips. The ‘experience design’ was in managing their entire journey, ensuring that every moment of every day was a positive one. There was an incredible amount of flexibility allowed for adding special touches to the trip: whether it was blindfolding the group on our approach to the Grand Canyon (safely, of course) so that their first view was jaw-dropping, or cutting up a watermelon in 130 degree heat at the lowest point in North America, Death Valley. Everything that I did from sun-up to sun-down was in service of their experience, which was, in fact, reflected in the company’s given title for its Tour Leaders: the “Chief Experience Officers.”

As an Operations Specialist

As an Operations Specialist with G Adventures my ‘users’ became the very Tour Leaders that I described above, both in the U.S. as well as across the globe. The ‘experience design’ was in creating processes, platforms, and technologies for this nomadic audience. I didn't call myself a “User Experience Designer,” but it was in this role that my work most closely resembled what a UX Designer does, i.e., working with stakeholders and engineers to design and launch products for a specific group of users. It was also in this role that I learned of my talent for designing digital experiences, and even though I was building spreadsheets and Google Sites instead of prototypes in Figma, it led me to the work that I love today.

Becoming a UX Designer

After nearly a decade in the travel industry, I made the difficult decision to move back to California to be closer to family. Never afraid of change, I also reevaluated my career to date to see if I could make any improvements. I identified the work that I excelled at, as well as the tasks that gave me the most energy, and it was in the middle of that Venn Diagram that I discovered the UX industry.

In the months since I've been training myself for a career in UX. I've practiced with the required tools, built projects from scratch, and earned Google's UX Career Certificate to ensure that I'm versed in UX methodologies. This period was incredibly insightful and necessary to upskill myself, but it's also proven to me that I've been an experience designer throughout my entire career... even if my title hasn't always reflected it.
